About the UPC and EAN Check Digit

UPC and EAN Check Digit checks that barcode numbers are valid, or works out the missing last digit. The last digit of every UPC, EAN and GTIN is a check digit calculated from the others, so a single mistyped digit is caught.

It works with UPC-A (12 digits), EAN-13 (13), EAN-8 (8) and GTIN-14 (14), as many at once as you like.

How to use it

  1. Choose whether to check full codes or add a check digit.
  2. Paste codes, one per line.
  3. Read the result for each line, and copy the corrected or completed codes.

Example

036000291452 is a valid UPC-A. 4006381333932 is not a valid EAN-13: it should end in 1. Adding the check digit to 03600029145 gives 036000291452.

Questions

Does a valid check digit mean the barcode is registered?

No. It only means the number is well-formed. Real product barcodes come from GS1 and must be registered to your company.

Can I make up barcode numbers?

Not for retail or marketplaces. Amazon and most retailers check numbers against GS1. For internal stock labels, use Code 128 with your SKU instead.

Is a UPC the same as an EAN?

A 12-digit UPC-A is the same number as a 13-digit EAN with a 0 in front.
