About the SKU Generator
SKU Generator builds a readable stock code for every product and variant at once. It takes the first letters of each word in the product name, then adds each option such as color and size: "Linen Shirt" in blue, small becomes LIN-SHI-BLU-S.
Every combination of option 1 and option 2 gets its own SKU, and two products that would shorten to the same code are numbered so no SKU repeats.
How to use it
- List your product names, one per line.
- Add option values, such as colors and sizes, separated by commas.
- Choose letters per part, a prefix and a separator.
- Copy the SKUs or download the CSV.
Example
Three products with two colors and three sizes make 18 SKUs: LIN-SHI-BLU-S, LIN-SHI-BLU-M, LIN-SHI-BLU-L and so on. "Canvas Tote Bag" with 2 words from the name becomes CAN-TOT.
Questions
What makes a good SKU?
Short, all capitals, letters and numbers only, and the same pattern everywhere, so anyone can read it on a shelf or a packing slip.
Should a SKU start with a zero?
Avoid it. Spreadsheets often drop leading zeros, which changes the code.
Can I use these in Shopify?
Yes. Paste them into the SKU column of a product CSV, then check it with the Shopify CSV Checker.
