About the Reorder Point Calculator

Reorder Point Calculator tells you the stock level at which to place your next order. When stock falls to that number, what you have left covers the sales until the new stock arrives.

Add your busiest day and your supplier's longest delay, and it adds safety stock for both, so a busy week or a late shipment doesn't leave you sold out.

How to use it

  1. Enter your average sales per day.
  2. Enter the usual lead time from order to stock on the shelf.
  3. Optionally add your most sold in a day and the longest lead time, for safety stock.
  4. Optionally add stock on hand to see how many days until you need to reorder.

Example

Selling 10 a day with a 14-day lead time uses 140 units while you wait. With a busy day of 15 and a worst-case lead time of 20 days, safety stock is 15 × 20 − 10 × 14 = 160, so reorder at 300. With 400 in stock, that's 10 days away.

Questions

What is safety stock?

Extra stock held for days you sell more than usual or deliveries arrive late. Without it, the reorder point only works when everything goes to plan.

How do I find average daily sales?

Divide units sold over the last 30 or 90 days by the number of days. Use a recent period that looks like the coming one.

How much should I order?

This tells you when to order, not how much. A common start is enough to cover sales until your next planned order, plus the safety stock.
