About the Word Counter

Word Counter counts words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences and paragraphs as you type, and estimates reading time. Use it for essays with a word limit, product descriptions, cover letters or social posts.

Reading time is based on an average adult silent reading speed of about 238 words per minute.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type your text.
  2. Read the counts as they update.
  3. Copy the summary if you need to report it.

Example

A 500-word blog post with 3,000 characters shows "500 words" and a reading time of about 2 minutes.

Questions

How are words counted?

Anything separated by spaces or line breaks counts as a word, the same way most word processors count.

How are characters counted?

As you see them: an emoji or an accented letter counts as one character.

Is my text saved?

No. It is counted in your browser and never sent anywhere.
